The Public Utility Commission of Texas regulates the state's electric, telecommunication, and water and sewer utilities, implements respective legislation, and provides customer assistance in resolving consumer complaints.
Area codes are three-digit numbers that represent Numbering Plan Areas (NPAs). The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) provides maps and an area code search.
Central office codes, also known as exchanges, prefixes, or NXXs (prefixes), are three digit codes and follow the area code. NANPA assigns these codes to local service providers. To search for prefixes within an area code, select the state and the NPA, then click "generate report". The report shows the NPA, the different prefixes, the company who has ownership of the prefix, and the rate center the prefix was assigned to.
Any questions about area codes or prefixes can be sent to areacode@puc.texas.gov.
