Why Intern with the PUCT?

If you are thinking about a career in utility regulation industry, our internship program could be a great start for you. We provide college students with a realistic view of what a career with the Public Utility Commission entails. As an intern, you will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience within one of our divisions.

Types of Internships

The PUCT has the following college student internships:

• Unpaid Internships

  A majority of the PUCT internships are unpaid. An unpaid internship is through course-credit only. In order to be eligible for an internship through course credit, a student must be enrolled in an approved course through his or her university and must show proof of enrollment in the course.

• Paid Internships

  Depending on the agency's budget, the PUCT occasionally hires student interns. Paid internships are only available to Juniors, Seniors, Graduate and PhD students. Pay is determined by the number of college credit hours completed at the time of application.

• Law Clerk Program

  The Law Clerk Program introduces qualified second-year, third-year law students and recent graduates who are taking the Texas Bar exam to the rewarding and diverse legal work of the PUCT in Compliance and Enforcement; Legal; the Office of Policy and Docket Management; or Rules and Projects. • Oil, Gas & Energy Resources Law Internship Program - this program has been established by the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law (OGERL) Section of the State Bar of Texas which provides students with demonstrated interest in oil, gas and energy resources the opportunity to obtain practical experience and exposure. The OGERL Section may sponsor a summer internship with the PUCT. The internship is six (6) weeks long and provides a stipend. Law students can begin to apply for the program in February. • Long Career Launch Program - designed for recent graduates of the University of Texas School of Law to obtain legal work experience in an unpaid internship while awaiting bar results and looking for full-time employment. Graduates selected through the Long Career Launch Program will receive a stipend to support work in an unpaid legal internship with the PUCT. More information can be found here.
• Other University Course-For-Credit or Stipend Programs - if you attend a university that offers a course-for-credit internship program or a stipend program, you may intern through that university's program. Proof of enrollment through one of those programs must be provided in order to intern at the PUCT.
• Paid Law Clerk Program - the PUCT occasionally hires Law Clerks who are awaiting their Texas Bar Results. Paid Law Clerk positions will be posted on the State's CAPPS Applicant System.

Who is Eligible for an Internship?

Below are the minimum qualifications for the unpaid student course-for-credit internship program:

• Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of 30 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university.

How to Apply for an Internship

Unpaid internships will be listed in the "Current Available Unpaid Student Internships" section on this page. To apply for a listed internship, interested students must submit a letter of interest, resume and transcript via email to: hr@puc.texas.gov. Selected students will be required to show proof of enrollment in an internship for academic credit course.

Paid internships will be posted on the "Jobs" page with instructions on how to apply.

Law Clerk Internships through the Oil, Gas & Energy Resources Law Internship program and the Long Career Launch program will be posted through their websites which are listed in the "Law Clerk Program" section of the "Types of Internships."

To apply for a Law Clerk internship for course-credit, interested law students must submit a letter of interest, resume, transcripts via email to: hr@puc.texas.gov. Selected students will be required to show proof of enrollment in an internship for academic credit course.

To apply for a Law Clerk internship stipend program through your university, recent law school graduates must submit a letter of interest, resume and transcript to hr@puc.texas.gov. Selected law school graduates will be required to show proof of acceptance into your University's stipend program.
